Jim and Frank Mysteries Solutions - Puzzle #48 - Matchstick Mania
Neither of these worked when I played. Here's what I did:
Move bottom two diagonals to make new triangles with top one. Move horizontal stick from bottom and lay parallel with horizontal one of middle triangle. Rough picture below. Sorry not better.
The key is that it never states the 4 equilateral triangles are the same size. by moving the lower triangle to the right side of the other two. you create a smaller yet still equilateral (because all of it's sides are the same size) triangle between your big three.
Hi Anon (9:49pm), i like that solution better bu cannot get that to work, is it really strict about the positioning of the matches? Any chance of a screengrab of you solution?
Not sure what version you guys are playing but my solution was as follows......states u can move all the matches, they just cant overlap/cross over!!!!
place 5 diagonal matches in a row ie:: /\/\/
then place horizontal matches on top and under to create 4 triangles ie: _-_-
After trying various moves as explained above (and getting the annoying WRONG side of the coin!), I found the end result in this video worked: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-change-3-triangles-into-4-triangles-284963/
The solution for this puzzle is to move the lower triangle to the upper part. So it will be sth like this _ \/ /--\ move the horizontal line from the lower triangle and put it under the first _ triangle (so that there will be 2 horizontal lines parallel to each other) \/ last step is to place the 2 matches so that it will make a triangular shape
Note: u don't need to rotate any matches in this puzzle, and also the end of the 2 matches is not connected to the other matches. Hope it'll help:D

My solution... a big triangle 2 matches long on each side with a triangle in the middle that breaks it into 4 little triangles.
Hi Anon,
ReplyDeleteYeah that works! But the puzzle info says you can only move 3 matches, i think you moved more than that?
I reckon this puzzle needs revising.
